Merry Christmas!

Wishing a very merry Christmas to all our members and coaches. It was great to see so many of you at the Christmas meal, and kudos to the hardy Santas who paddled beforehand. We’re still heading out over winter (rain, snow or shine) and have a final paddle of 2022 planned on 30 December. Keep a look out also for our first paddle of 2023…

Night paddling

There’s nothing quite like an evening paddle, watching the sun go down and paddling home in quiet darkness. In winter when the sun disappears early it’s more important than ever to have lights with you when heading out. To join any of our night paddles you will need: 2 x white lights (no red or coloured). 1 for front and 1 for back Lights should have steady mode. Only the rowers have flashing lights Headtorch – you can … Read more

Dean

It is with huge sadness we pass on the news that Dean, our much loved coach and friend, has died after a very short illness. Most of you will have paddled with Dean, or seen him paddling his canoe We-no-nah up and down the Thames over the last 10 years or so. He used the river as a space to think, to breathe, to be alone and to come together with friends. Dean was our … Read more

Merry Christmas

In early December we were lucky to once again hold our annual club Christmas meal, and the celebration was a great success. Starting with a paddle for the hardy members amongst us, a festive crew headed towards Hammersmith to spread a little cheer in their santa hats. It was then on to the George & Devonshire where the staff had decorated the room with Christmas decorations and crackers galore, and we tucked into seasonal food … Read more

Taster sessions

We’ve had some great taster sessions over the last year and met some fantastic people. Thank you to all the coaches and helpers who got involved, and to the taster paddlers for putting 100% into trying out new skills, mucking in, and generally being lovely! We’re glad to welcome some of you as members and hope to see the rest of you by the river soon. Our taster sessions are nearly over for the season … Read more

Boat maintenance and repairs

We recently had a boat maintenance and repairs day, along with a much needed clear out of the garage. Huge thanks to Julius for organising this, and to Julius, Dean, Kiki, Liz, Elaine, Sarah and Michelle for all their hard work returning the fleet to tip top condition! The lost property and spare clothing boxes were overflowing and an email will soon be going out to members with photos of items for you to claim.

Dean’s lake adventure

The club was contacted by English Heritage following an assessment of a historic bridge over the ornamental lake in the grounds of Chiswick House. The bridge had lost a couple of facing stones on the underside of the arch and to be sure that it was safe, needed to be assessed by a structural surveyor. Luckily he was a 2 star canoeist but health and safety required a safety boat – enter Dean stage left! … Read more

A Short Report From the Putney Bound Group.

We had a very easy paddle to Putney where the pub was vetoed for a delicious coffee in the church in the square instead. Our return was obviously much harder whilst now paddling into the wind, but there were only shorts bursts that felt like we were stuck in time (and motion). Otherwise it was a challenging but fun paddle. We didn’t see Sarah’s and Dave’s group – Julius caught us at Putney Bridge and … Read more
